New electric buses power Nottingham’s clean air ambitions

Nottingham has recently launched its first UK all-electric Park and Ride Service.

On Friday 16th December 2016 Nottingham City Council launched its 13 fully electric single decker buses operating in Nottingham from January 2017. £3.2m as been invested in 13 new fully electric single decker buses, supplied by Chinese manufacturer Build Your Dreams (BYD), to add to the 45 electric buses already in service. They combine to make one of the largest electric bus fleets in Europe. Hollywood star Leonardo Di Caprio recently became a brand ambassador for BYD, so hopefully he’ll join us in Nottingham soon to to try out one of our new buses!!

The exciting new bus launch took place at the Queens Drive Park and Ride site – one of two park and ride sites – where services are soon to be in full electric operation. Both Queens Drive and Nottingham Racecourse Park and Ride services Centrelink & EcoLink will turn electric on 30th January 2017.

The Queens Drive service formally named the Citylink1 is now branded the CENTRELINK and the Nottingham Racecourse formally named the Citylink2 is now branded the ECOLINK.

As part of the electric bus launch ten pupils from the Welbeck Primary School took part in a poster competition with designs showing the environmental benefits of Nottingham’s electric buses and the children also had the opportunity to have one of the electric buses named after them.

Since starting operations in 2012, the existing electric bus fleet of 45 reached the one million miles travelled milestone earlier this year, generating fuel savings of £300,000, reductions in carbon emissions of at least 1,050 tonnes and improved air quality due to zero tailpipe emissions.
